3 key words for the biosecurity on your site

African swine fever (ASF) is extremely lethal for pigs. The disease is hard to combat and there are (still) no effective vaccines for protecting your livestock. However, the virus does not spread by air, like with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), but rather via human beings. A contamination can quickly be initiated by transport or via feed that has been taken along. We will therefore briefly summarise the measures you can take for good biosecurity!

1: HYGIENE ON AND AROUND THE FARM

The terrain all around the pigsty as well as the walking, feeding and central corridors must, as much as possible, be free of manure, dust and dirt. A weed-free pavement around the sties facilitates the whole process. Having enough small equipment on hand for maintenance activities is obviously a must.

Also be sure to have your own manure hose during the manure loading, and don´t leave any manure lying around on the site. In other words, make a clear distinction between a clean road and a dirty one.

2: ACCESS PROHIBITED FOR UNAUTHORISED ANIMALS

Good exclusion and control of vermin is crucial. Provide for bait boxes along walls and fill them with fresh bait. Also be sure to do an inspection tour along the sties and check whether there are any unintended points of entry for vermin (rats and mice). Cover air inlets with wire gauze and possibly outsource the pest prevention and control to a specialised firm. In addition, make sure that pets, such as dogs and cats, do not enter the sty and pen up pigs that run around outside.

3: CLEANING AND DECONTAMINATION SYSTEMS

After a farm visit, it is important to clean and decontaminate all vehicles (e.g. for feed, livestock and manure transport). That can be done with mounting systems that are installed on the lorries and a decontamination arch or basin at the exit of the farm. The latter serves to disinfect the entire chassis of the vehicles.

In addition, a good cleaning and decontamination of loading and unloading points as well as of the carcass storage area is a must. Choose a good disinfectant, because not all of the standard agents are equally effective against ASF.
